A Musical Trail through the History of Ireland

    Concerts

Ceoltóirí Sliabh Luachra will present their show “A Musical Trail Through The History Of Ireland” in Brú Ború Cashel on Saturday 14th April at 8 p.m. Ceoltóirí Sliabh Luachra are a group of talented young performers from the Sliabh Luachra area along the Cork/Kerry border, who were brought together by Rockchapel Comhaltas Branch and spent a year preparing this show. The show resulted in much research into the ancient and almost forgotten traditional Irish music and Dance of Ireland. Some of their tunes go back to the book of William Ballett published in 1583, to the collection of John and William Neale who had a shop in the yard of Christs Church in Dublin and who published a collection of Irish tunes in 1724, to the collection of William Bunting who collected most of his music at the great Belfast Harp Festival of 1793, to many of the other famous collectors of traditional Irish music, and from the manuscripts of such noted musicians as Mickie Cumba O Suilleabhain from Caherdaniel in Co. Kerry and Eoin O’ Suilleabhain from Caherciveen both of whom have long since passed on. The research and teaching of the music was done by Nickie McAuliffe who is one of Ireland’s leading authorities of traditional Irish music. The teaching of the dances was started by the late Joe O Donovan from Cork and was continued by Patrick O Dea from Roscommon and Gearoid Devanie from Connamara. Nora Butler taught the singing. The group are doing many of the old and almost forgotten dances, such as An Rince Mór which was danced at the Fair of Carman in the year 1200 and at Kinsale in 1689 to welcome King James to Ireland. They also do The Black Bird, The Job Of Journeywork, Rodney’s Glory, The Garden of Daisies, The Three Sea Captains, Madame Boneparte, and some of the old tradsitional Jigs Reels and Hornpipes, the history behind these dances is also explained. The show which is narrated throughout links the music and dance with all the major events in the history of Ireland from the arrival of An Tuaithe De Dannan to Easter 1916 and is the only such show in Ireland. This is a great chance to experience the history of Ireland through traditional music, song and dance. Tickets can be booked by phoning Brú Ború on 062 61122. Tickets are priced at €10 per adult and €5 per child.
